A leading Antwerp fashion designer requested to have a bed made based on an authentic Chinese window element. As the bed was to be part of an entirely oriental interior, it was very important to make it look authentic and integrate it perfectly in the existing interior.

I created a design based on the existing panel and chinese canvases by interior designer Gert Voorjans', and refined the design by researching authentic Chinese elements. The existing panel was supplemented with new pieces of local coniferous wood. Just like in the original panel, the moles were cut by hand. We did not paint over the original parts, but opted to give the new pieces the same finesse as the antiques. It was a challenge to recreate the warmth and shimmer, but I succeeded in simulating the original finish of the antique piece by combining wax stain with matte paint (Farrow & Ball's dead flat oil).
